In Oxford we have to raise all the money for election campaigns locally, and events like this are absolutely vital.

John Healey was elected to represent Wentworth and Dearne in 1997.  He served in various government roles, including as Local Government Minister, but is best known for his spell as Minister for Housing in 2009-10, when he was associated with radical policy change, including giving councils the ability to impose standards more stringently in privately rented housing (a policy announced in Oxford), and a major reform of council house finance, paving the way for councils to get building again.  He is also credited with measures to mitigate the impact of the financial crisis on the housing market - in particular, the number of mortgage repossessions was far lower than in previous recessions, as a result of government intervention. John served as Shadow Secretary of State for Health at the time of the Health and Social Care Act being passed, in spite of his vigorous opposition.  Recently, he has been promoted to the shadow cabinet position of Shadow Housing and Planning Minister, and is leading Labour's fight against the Housing and Planning Bill.
