Oxford Labour Joins The Drop The Bill Campaign

Oxford Labour has joined the campaign to unite the country in a call on the Government to drop its unwanted and damaging Health and Social Care Bill.

The Drop the Bill campaign aims to show the full scale of opposition to the Government’s plans, uniting patients, NHS professionals and members of the public.

Labour MP for Oxford East, Andrew Smith, said: "The coalition government is planning the biggest re-organisation of the NHS since it began in 1948.

Andrew Smith MP Praises Pioneering Cancer Research Centre

Labour MP for Oxford East, Andrew Smith, met with Cancer Research UK scientists last week (Friday 13 January) to learn about the world class research taking place in Oxford.

Andrew visited part of the Oxford Cancer Research Centre at the Old Road Campus Research Building and donned a lab coat to witness the Centre’s groundbreaking research firsthand.

 

Oxford Labour Opposes Con/Dem Cuts To Warden Services

People living in sheltered accommodation have had their daily warden services slashed as a result of the cuts being forced through by the Lib Dem / Tory Coalition Government.

Oxford Labour Councillors are arguing that urgent action needs to be taken to protect residents. Dee Sinclair, Labour City Councillor for Quarry and Risinghurst, said:"We are appalled by what’s happened. The city council is looking at a number of ways to help the residents who have been abandoned by this government".

 

Oxford City Council Delivers New Customer Service Centre

September 2011 saw the opening of the fully renovated Oxford City Council Customer Service Centre in St Aldates. The new centre has been designed to allow residents to access advice in a more convenient way.

The new centre, which has a spacious open plan layout, will provide a range of services such as providing advice on council tax, housing benefit, and planning applications and it will have information about environmental and waste management issues.

Oxford Labour Backs ‘Fair Pensions For All’ Day Of Action

Whether in the public or private sector, everyone deserves a decent pension. Thousands of public sector workers and supporters joined the demonstration on 30th November to make this point. Whilst the disruption caused is regrettable, people were prepared to lose a day’s pay to make their case and Oxford Labour was there to back them.

Only Labour councillors supported a motion at Oxfordshire County Council on 13th December 2011 calling for decent pensions for all.

Oxford Labour Women’s Group Speak Out On Con/Dem Cuts

Women are being particularly hard-hit but the Lib Dem / Tory coalition government’s cuts.

Two thirds of public sector jobs are done by women.

Women are losing twice as much as men in cuts to benefits and tax credits – mainly because the cuts fall disproportionally on those caring for children.

Oxford Labour Takes Action To Improve HMOs & Secure Balanced Communities

Labour-run Oxford City Council has taken tough action on houses in multiple occupation. After listening to the concerns of local residents the Council has taken action to ensure local communities have a balance of housing, rather than HMOs taking over entire areas. At the same time, Oxford has led the way in introducing a system of licensing, which means that all HMOs have to be inspected to ensure they are safe and meet minimum standards, and landlords have to manage properties appropriately.

Oxford Labour Welcomes Reopening Of The Old Fire Station

The West End Regeneration project continues to take shape with the reopening of the Old Fire Station.

Labour-run Oxford City Council have worked alongside the homelessness charity Crisis to develop the building into a high quality resource for the local community. The building will house two organisations: Crisis Skylight and Arts at the Old Fire Station.

Crisis Skylight is dedicated to working with homeless and vulnerably housed people. They will provide access to employment opportunities, such as a social enterprise cafe.

Labour Launch 5-Point Plan For The Economy

Labour MP for Oxford East, Andrew Smith, joined Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls at the launch of Labour’s five-point plan to kick start sustainable economic growth.

Andrew said: "The Lib Dem-Tory economic policy is not working. Services are being cut and unemployment is going up, making it harder to reduce the deficit".

 

Oxford Labour Open 50th Refurbished Play Area

This month saw the opening of the 50th children’s play area to be refurbished by the Labour-run Oxford City Council.

The Bury Knowle play area officially opened on Friday 23rd September following an £115,000 investment in which all existing play equipment was replaced.

When Labour took overall control of the council play areas all across the city were being closed by the Liberal administration and children and local communities were suffering.
