Job Title: Assistant Organiser

Location: Oxford Labour Office in Cowley, Oxford

Salary: £21,108.69 pro-rata

The Assistant Organiser will assist the Local Organiser in mobilising local members and supporting Labour candidates in campaigning to maintain and extend Labour’s control of Oxford City Council in the May 2022 Local Elections. The Assistant Organiser will report to and be managed by Oxford & District Labour Party Local Organiser, Brad Baines. This is an excellent opportunity for the candidate to gain some paid work-experience in election campaigning with an effective and successful local party, with a strong national reputation. This position would suit someone interested in pursuing a career in public or electoral campaigns, but this is not a prerequisite.

The temporary post will be for 15 weeks starting on 31st January 2022 or shortly beforehand if possible and end on Friday 14th May, after the Local Elections on Thursday 5th May 2022.

Hours of work are 37.5 per week and are flexible with a lot of weekend and evening working. Paid holiday entitlement will be 28 days pro rata.

The salary is on the Labour Party mobilisation assistant scale – pro rata to £21,108.69.

The Assistant Organiser will be based at the Oxford & District Labour Party Office, Unit A, Bishops Mews, Transport Way, Oxford OX4 6HD.

 

Interview/Start Dates:

Interviews will be on Friday 14th or Saturday 15th January 2022

Key responsibilities include:

  1. To design, print and oversee the distribution of newsletters and mailings.
  2. To organise and lead campaign activities including canvassing, phone banks and data entry.
  3. To assist in the administration of an efficient campaign office.
  4. To assist in the organisation of campaign events and visits.
  5. To develop local Labour Parties electronic campaigning capabilities and social media campaigns.
  6. To maintain Contact Creator and volunteer databases.
  7. To organise Polling-Day campaigning in key seats across the City.
  8. To recruit and manage volunteers to assist with data entry, fund-raising and campaigning with Oxford & District Labour Party.
  9. To work with local campaign coordinators to identify campaign leaders and provide training and support to them on campaign techniques.
  10. To support the development of local fundraising and fundraising schemes to ensure the CLP has adequate funding to organise, campaign and contest elections.
  11. To attend and participate in training sessions relating to the role as directed.

 

Person Specification:

Essential Skills and Experience:

  1. General knowledge of the Labour Party, its policies, principles and organisation.
  2. Share the aims and values of the Labour Party and have experience of campaigning in elections.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of campaign techniques.
  4. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  5. Good computer literacy, including use of email communication systems and data input.
  6. Prepared to work flexibly and during unsocial hours particularly in the evenings and at weekends.
  7. Able to get on with a wide range of people, have strong negotiating skills and be able to motivate others to campaign for the Labour Party.
  8. Excellent organisational skills and be strong at record-keeping and attention to detail.
  9. Willing to take responsibility for planning and delivering objectives.
  10. Able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines.

 

Desirable but not essential skills and experience:

  1. A track record of helping to get Labour candidates elected
  2. Knowledge of Labour Party Campaign Technology including: Achieve, Campaign Creator, Connect, Organise, Promote/Reach, WordPress etc.
  3. Experience of fundraising.
  4. Experience of using DTP packages such as Adobe InDesign to produce leaflets.
  5. Experience of digital campaigning and social media.
