Oxford & District Labour Party – Assistant Organiser

Job Title: Assistant Organiser

Responsible to: Local Organiser, Brad Baines

Location: Oxford Labour office in Cowley, Oxford

Oxford & District Labour Party is looking to appoint an assistant organiser – fixed term for 4 months from early January 2020 – based at our campaign centre in Cowley. We have a strong and energetic local party, looking to  build on our majority in the 2020 Oxford City elections, make gains in the 2021 County elections.

This is an excellent opportunity for the candidate to gain some paid work-experience in election campaigning from an effective and successful local party. It would suit someone interested in pursuing this as a career but is open to others too.

The temporary post will be for 19 weeks starting on 6th January 2020 or shortly afterwards and ending early in mid-May after the elections, which take place on Thursday 7th

Hours of work are 37.5, flexible with a lot of weekend and evening working. Paid holiday entitlement will be 28 days pro rata.

The Assistant Organiser will be based at the Labour Party Office, Unit A, Bishops Mews, Transport Way, Oxford OX4 6HD.

The responsibilities are to assist our Local Organiser in all aspects of campaigning and Party support, including:

  • production of written and digital campaign materials
  • doorstep campaigning
  • mobilising members

Key Responsibilities:

  • To design, print and oversee the distribution of newsletters and mailings
  • To organise and lead doorstep campaigning
  • To develop e-campaigning
  • To maintain Contact Creator and volunteer databases
  • To organise election-day campaigning
  • To recruit and manage volunteers to assist with data entry, fund-
  • raising and campaigning
  • To help build party membership and an active local party
  • To assist otherwise in local party activities as directed

Person Specification:

The Assistant Organiser must:

  • Be a member of, or long-standing campaigner for, the Labour Party and have experience of campaigning in elections
  • Be prepared to work flexibly and during unsocial hours particularly in the evenings and at weekends.
  • Be able to get on with a wide range of people, have strong negotiating skills and be able to motivate others to campaign for the Labour Party
  • Have excellent organisational skills, and be strong at record-keeping and attention to detail.
  • Be willing to take responsibility for planning and delivering objectives.
  • Be able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and in a flexible way.

Also desirable 

  • Have a track record of helping to get Labour candidates elected
  • Have excellent written communication skills.
  • Have some knowledge of modern IT packages and Labour Party computer packages.

Salary is on the Labour Party mobilisation assistant scale – pro rata to £19,889.47 plus a fixed sum allowance of £399.
