Oxfordshire Labour is very pleased that today the Cabinet of Oxfordshire County Council voted to support the proposal to proceed with a leasehold disposal of ‘the Triangle’ to Oxford United FC.

This is an important step towards providing Oxford United the security of a new long-term home with a new stadium fit for the 21st century, as their current lease at the Kassam comes to an end in 2026.

Deputy Leader of the Oxfordshire Labour & Co-operative Group, Cllr Charlie Hicks said:

“We are very pleased that today Cabinet decided to proceed with the leasehold disposal of ‘The Triangle’ to Oxford United FC. This is an important step forward in providing a new home for the club and securing their future.”

“The County Council proposals were backed by an overwhelming majority of Oxfordshire residents during the consultation. This demonstrates the importance Oxford United holds within our City and County.”

“We hope that concerns raised by residents, particularly in Kidlington, are addressed where possible by the Club as part of their planning application to Cherwell District Council.”

“The Lease Agreement will also contain requirements that proposals must meet the strategic priorities of the council, including a fully costed net zero plan and a legal covenant that means the land can only be used for a football stadium and community sports in perpetuity.”
