Labour selects special needs and disabilities champion as their candidate for Iffley Fields and St Mary’s by-election

The Labour Party have selected Damian Haywood as their candidate for the upcoming County Council by-election in Iffley Fields and St Mary’s, following the resignation of Labour councillor, Helen Evans, for family reasons.

Damian has lived locally for 18 years and works for Oxford University in the field of NHS clinical research. He is chair of the governing body of Mabel Prichard’s School for children with learning difficulties and also treasurer of a national charity for families with disabled children. He had recently led a successful Oxfordshire-wide campaign to stop proposed Tory cuts to the school transport service for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The Leader of the Labour Group, Liz Brighouse said “I am thrilled that Damian has been selected to stand as the Labour Candidate in Iffley Fields and St Mary’s he has a strong understanding of Social Justice and how that relates to those who require the services of Oxfordshire County Council. He has a successful record in campaigning and led the opposition to the cuts in transport for children and young people with disabilities. He is also a keen cyclist who understands the trials faced by those cycling in our City. The Labour Group look forward to working with Damian to get him elected.”

Damian will work hard for the people of Iffley Fields and St Mary’s. A vote for Damian will be a vote to:

  • protect children’s and family services
  • tackle drug dealing and anti-social nuisance
  • push for better cycle and road safety
  • defend services for homeless people
  • resist austerity and privatisation
